Analysis of the Five Major Causes of Residual Moisture in Air Compressor Systems After Drying
Apr 16 , 2026

The air compressor system mainly consists of air receivers, dryers and filters. Dry compressed air ensures the operation of the air system and the production process of air compressors. The dryer is designed to remove condensed water from compressed air and deliver dry, clean compressed air. However, compressed air still contains moisture even with dryers installed, which is attributed to the following five reasons.

1High humidity of ambient air around the air compressor stationAir inherently contains moisture with a certain humidity level. During air compression, the high temperature inside the compressor causes water to evaporate directly into water vapor, which is then discharged with the compressor pressure. As the temperature drops subsequently, the water vapor condenses into liquid water. Therefore, it is recommended to operate the air compressor in a low-humidity environment or drain such condensed water before startup and operation.

2Malfunction of post-treatment drying equipmentA typical refrigerated air dryer has a drying capacity of 3°C pressure dew point; if the on-site working temperature is below 3°C, moisture presence is inevitable. In such cases, it is advisable to install a micro-thermal adsorption dryer, which can achieve a -20°C pressure dew point after treatment and prevent moisture formation effectively.

3Insufficient capacity of drying equipmentIn general, an instantaneous large air consumption will lead to insufficient capacity of the drying equipment, resulting in residual moisture in the compressed air.

4Accumulated moisture in air receiversExcessive moisture accumulates when the drain valve is not operated or forgotten to be opened. It is required to open the drain valve at the bottom of the air receiver regularly and drain the accumulated water completely.
