Consequences of Improper Use of Oil Filters

1. Insufficient flow: A clogged oil filter will impede the normal circulation of lubricating oil, resulting in a reduced oil supply to the main unit, bearings and heat-dissipating components (e.g., airend).

2. Inadequate cooling: Lubricating oil is the primary medium for dissipating heat generated by compression and friction. Reduced flow means a drastic drop in heat dissipation capacity, leading to heat accumulation inside the main unit and a sharp rise in temperature.

3. Bypass valve activation: All oil filters are equipped with a bypass valve to prevent a complete oil flow interruption. When the pressure difference becomes excessive, the bypass valve opens, allowing unfiltered oil to flow directly into the main unit. While this ensures oil supply, it leads to more severe consequences.

4. Exacerbated wear: Contaminants in the oil act like an abrasive, accelerating the wear of male and female rotors as well as bearings. Increased internal clearances caused by wear result in internal leakage, where high-pressure gas escapes from high-pressure to low-pressure areas. Compressing the leaked gas consumes additional power, which is almost entirely converted into heat, causing a significant rise in discharge temperature. This is one of the primary mechanisms behind high temperatures caused by oil filter malfunctions.

5. Carbon deposit formation: Contaminated oil is more prone to oxidative deterioration and carbon deposit formation under high temperatures. Carbon deposits are both a cause and a result of high temperatures, creating a vicious cycle: deposits adhering to rotor surfaces reduce heat exchange efficiency; block oil passages and further decrease oil flow; clog the temperature control valve, preventing oil from entering the cooler for cooling; and block the oil-gas separator, increasing system resistance.

6. Impaired oil injection cooling performance: Contaminated oil undergoes changes in viscosity and thermal conductivity, leading to a decline in its heat carrying and transfer capacity and a significant reduction in cooling efficiency.
